3 Out-of-the-Box Ideas to Help You Reach Important Decisions

As you grow older, one of the hardest facets of adult life is having to make increasingly important and impactful decisions. Where once you might have struggled to decide whether purchasing boots for $100 was really an investment worth making, suddenly you’re faced with choices that actually matter: Whether to stay in your current job or splash out into the world of self-employment; whether to try for a baby now or in three years’ time; whether to stick with the security of your long-term partner or call time on your relationship.

It isn’t fun and it isn’t easy, but these are the types of choices we all need to make, and we have to reach a decision somehow – it’s how to go about it that’s the hard part. For many, the process is one of long hours spent in thought, meticulously weighing up the pros and cons; for others, a gut feeling that you seize on and allow to drag you along for the ride.

Sometimes, however, the decision remains seemingly impossible, no matter how much you agonize over which choice is right for you. In these circumstances, there are certain approaches you can try – ones that on the surface may appear a little illogical but can actually be wonderful tools in helping to clarify where you’re at.

Here are three you might want to experiment with.

Reach out to strangers for advice

When we’re struggling with a big decision, most of us adopt one of two approaches: We either internalize the thought process or turn to our nearest and dearest for advice and assistance. Unfortunately, both of these methods come with drawbacks. Try to make a decision solely based on your feelings, and you can become lost in your head and unable to see the wood from the trees; turn to your friends and family, and their views are almost always going to carry some degree of bias.

One alternative is to ask someone outside of the situation for advice. While we’re not suggesting you approach just anyone who might stumble across your path, reaching out online can be a good way to gain a more balanced perspective on your situation, especially if you seek out specialist groups or forums aimed at your particular demographic. Whether it’s a relationship in peril or self-doubt over your parenting abilities, speak to those who are likely to have gone through similar and see what their take on the situation is.

Let your inner desires decide

You may be someone who thinks themselves far too rational to consult the stars or fickle fortune for advice, but horoscopes and tarot readings can also be invaluable tools in helping to better analyze and assess your thoughts on a situation. That’s because both are very much open to interpretation, meaning the messages you take away from what you read or are told will often give an insight into the thoughts, opinions, or conclusions that are buried below the surface, and which you have perhaps failed to recognize in yourself.

For this reason, such methods can be incredibly useful in gaining clarity and getting a better sense of where your mind is at. You can consult specialists in this field online or by phone, while others choose to visit a psychic or reader in person.

Roll a dice

If you’re really stuck for inspiration and continually switching between one approach and another, there’s one final avenue open to you: rolling a die letting fortune decide. Like horoscopes and tarot readings, this is useful not so much in the sense of telling you what to do, but in helping you to realize what it is you truly want.

That’s because, in the very moment when you roll, you’ll almost certainly realize how you wish for the die or dice to fall – and it’s perfectly okay to go with this feeling as opposed to the actual result. This means that if you’re at peace with what the numbers show, you can take away that such an outcome was the one you were leaning toward all along whereas, if you’re dissatisfied with it, the other option may be the better choice to pursue.

How will you decide which decision is the right one for you?
